Waste Management Plan (WMP) for enterprises

Developing a Waste Management Plan for enterprises is a key step in ensuring sustainable development and compliance with environmental protection legislation, balanced natural resource management, and environmental safety. Below is a general scheme for developing such a plan:

  1. Current state analysis: Conducting an assessment of the current waste management situation at the enterprise, including identifying types of waste, their volumes, methods of disposal, and disposal options.
  2. Identification of legislative requirements and standards: Analysis of requirements established by legislation regarding waste management, as well as standards and regulations relevant to the specific industry of the enterprise.
  3. Setting goals and objectives: Establishing specific goals and objectives for waste management that align with the strategic goals of the enterprise and legislative requirements.
  4. Development of waste management strategy: Determining a strategy to achieve the established goals, including selecting methods for waste collection, sorting, processing, and disposal.
  5. Organization of waste management system: Identifying responsible individuals and organizational units that will be responsible for implementing the waste management plan.
  6. Development of operational procedures: Developing specific operational procedures and instructions for waste management, including procedures for collection, transportation, sorting, and disposal.
  7. Action plan and implementation: Developing an action plan considering the established strategies and operational procedures, and implementing this plan.

Waste Morphological Composition Research

On July 9, 2023, the basic Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” entered into force, initiating the reform of the waste management system in Ukraine and aimed at integrating Ukrainian legislation with that of the European Union.

To build an effective local waste management system, it is necessary to understand the initial parameters of the waste (raw materials). To do this, it is necessary to conduct a study of the morphological composition of waste, which is carried out in accordance with the Methodological Recommendations for Determining the Morphological Composition of Solid Household Waste (Order of the Ministry of Communal Services of Ukraine dated February 16, 2010, No. 39).

Research on the morphological composition of waste includes the analysis of the physical characteristics and properties of waste materials. This process helps to assess the composition of waste, which is important for effective waste management and resource recovery. Research typically involves the following steps:

  1. Waste characterization: This includes classifying waste into different types depending on their origin, composition, and physical properties. Waste can be classified into categories such as organic, inorganic, recyclable, hazardous, etc.
  2. Physical analysis: Physical characteristics of waste such as size, shape, density, and moisture are measured and recorded. This information helps determine the requirements for processing, storage, and treatment of different types of waste.
  3. Chemical analysis: Chemical composition analysis involves identifying the presence of various elements and compounds in the waste. This is done to assess the potential environmental impact and identify recyclable or hazardous components.
  4. Visual inspection: A visual inspection is conducted to identify visible contaminants, foreign objects, or any other anomalies in the waste stream. This helps in sorting and separating different types of waste for proper disposal or processing.
  5. Sampling and testing: Waste samples are collected and analyzed in laboratory conditions for a more accurate assessment of their composition. Various testing methods such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and microscopy may be used for detailed analysis.
  6. Data analysis and report preparation: Data collected from waste characterization and analysis are analyzed to formulate conclusions about the morphological composition of waste streams. A comprehensive report is prepared documenting the results and recommendations for waste management strategies.
  7. Continuous monitoring and updating: The composition of waste may change over time due to changes in consumer behavior, technological advancements, or legislative requirements. Therefore, continuous monitoring and periodic updating of waste composition data are important for effective planning and decision-making regarding waste management.
